What Do You Need to Know Before Using a Red Dot Sight on the Weapon?

In principle, each sight mounted on a firearm is an optical device, since its action is based on more or less complex optical phenomena. But it never even occurred to anyone to call an optical sight, consisting of a traditional fly and a whole. Fortunately, we will not talk about them and we will have to rack our brains only over the difference between “tubes with glasses,” whose action is based on a few more complex optical effects.

The main drawback of all mechanical sights, both open, consisting of a fly and a head, and dioptric, used in sports, sometimes also on combat weapons, is the impossibility of a sharp vision of both the sight and the target. The human eye resembles in its structure a lens, or rather, on the contrary, the lens inherited the optical scheme of the human eye.

And like every lens, the eye can focus on a certain object that is located from it at a certain distance. Hence it follows unequivocally that never and under no circumstances will the shooter be able to see equally sharply the target, located about a half meter away from his eye, a fly at a distance of about a meter, and a target separated by several dozens, and then hundreds of meters.

You have to focus your mind on one thing, and on what exactly it depends on the desired result. Arrows athletes competing in traditional Olympic types of shooting, try to ‘lay’ down as close to a certain point as possible on a non-moving target, that is, they aim precisely at the point. Well, how much and how exactly to use the advantages and circumvent the shortcomings is already a matter of design and type of sight. And, of course, its intended use.

The principle of the so-called transparent collimator red dot sight is based on the transformation of the radiation from the light source forming the impact mark and falling onto the optical element into a strictly parallel beam of rays, which is perceived by the observer’s eye. Aiming, the shooter should point the luminous point projecting onto the lens of the sight to the desired location of the bullet. Naturally, such a sight needs to be adjusted appropriately, that is, to shoot. As, however, and any other sight, not excluding the usual mechanical.

It must be specially emphasized that the luminous point, as a rule, is red, exists exclusively in the field of view and not on the target, unlike the laser target designators. It is essential for hunters: in many countries, the use of collision sights for hunting is quite legal, unlike laser target designators.

It is important to understand that the optical approach (increase) of the target, the narrowed field of view, the need for accurate, careful preparation for each shot and focusing of the sight, depending on the distance to the target, determine that the optical sight will better prove itself with a slow, accurate shooting from a stable position along the distant to a significant distance, best of all motionless (or very slowly moving) purposes. Keep a fast moving target in the field of view and sighting mark, it can be absolutely impossible, it will simply elude out of sight.
