What every shooter needs to know about Minute of Angle — verified math, scope turret conventions, and reticle holdover shortcuts.

MOA stands for Minute of Angle — a unit of angular measurement equal to 1/60 of one degree. Because the math is angular, it scales with distance: at 100 yards, 1 MOA is roughly 1 inch; at 500 yards, the same 1 MOA equals about 5 inches. Most U.S. hunting scopes click in 1/4 MOA increments, which means each turret click moves your point of impact about 0.25 inch at 100 yards. That's the key concept. The rest of this guide is the math, the click convention, and the BDC reticle shortcut that lets you hold over distance without dialing.

1 MOA is an angle, not a distance. The same click on the same scope moves the bullet by 1.047 inches at 100 yards — and 5.235 inches at 500 yards.

The geometry of a minute

A circle is 360 degrees. A degree is 60 minutes. So a full circle contains 21,600 minutes of angle. If you point a rifle at the center of a target 100 yards away, the angular size of 1 MOA at that distance works out to 1.047 inches — almost exactly 1 inch, which is why the industry rounds to 1 MOA = 1 inch at 100 yards. The 0.047-inch difference is negligible for hunting and most target work; Precision shooters usually use the exact 1.047-inch value regardless of whether they shoot MOA or MIL.

The reason the math works cleanly is that 1 MOA is angular, not linear. Push the target out to 200 yards and 1 MOA doubles to 2.094 inches. At 300 yards it is 3.141 inches. At 500 yards it is 5.235 inches. The conversion is just the distance divided by 100, multiplied by 1.047.

How clicks translate into point of impact

A rifle scope's click value is the number of MOA the turret moves per audible click. The convention in U.S. hunting and LPVO scopes is 1/4 MOA per click — Many CVLIFE hunting scopes use 1/4 MOA adjustments. Precision and F-class competition scopes often use 1/8 MOA clicks for finer adjustment. Some inexpensive hunting scopes and specialty optics may use 1/2 MOA or 1 MOA adjustments. The click value is always printed on the scope's spec sheet and is usually etched on the turret cap.

To use it: convert your measured offset from inches to MOA first (offset inches / 1.047, multiplied by 100 / distance in yards), then multiply the MOA by the reciprocal of the click value. For a 1/4 MOA scope, multiply by 4 to get clicks. For a 1/8 MOA scope, multiply by 8.

Worked example. Your 3-shot group lands 3 inches low at 100 yards.

2.87 × 4 (clicks per MOA on a 1/4 MOA scope) = ~11 clicks UP on the elevation turret.

One common mistake is mixing units. A scope that says "1/4 inch at 100 yards" is the same as 1/4 MOA at 100 yards; the rounding is intentional. A scope that says "0.1 MIL per click" is not the same as 1/4 MOA — the click is angular in mils, not linear in inches. The math is interchangeable if you convert, but the numbers on the turret are not.

MOA vs MIL: which system you are using

MOA and MIL are two ways of measuring the same thing — the angle between your line of sight and the bullet's path. MOA remains the most common choice among U.S. hunters, while MIL dominates many modern PRS and long-range competitions. The conversion is exact: 1 MOA = 0.2909 MIL, or equivalently, 1 MIL = 3.438 MOA. None of this changes the bullet's actual flight path; it only changes the number you read on the turret and the reticle hash marks.

For a U.S. whitetail or predator hunter, MOA is the natural choice: yards are the standard distance unit, and most factory ammunition ballistics are published in inches at 100-yard increments. Choose MIL only if your reticle is mil-based, your ballistic solver uses mils, and you already think in mils. Mixing the two mid-stream is the most common way to lose a zero in the field.

BDC reticles: holdover without dialing

A BDC (bullet drop compensator) reticle puts the math directly into the crosshair. Instead of dialing the elevation turret for distance, you aim using one of the lower hash marks calibrated to your cartridge's drop at 200, 300, 400, or 500 yards. The reticle becomes a built-in range card.

BDC hash marks are typically calibrated to a specific bullet weight, ballistic coefficient, and muzzle velocity. A reticle calibrated for .308 Win 175-grain match ammo at 2,650 fps will not give correct holdovers for .223 Rem 55-grain at 3,200 fps. Read the manual that came with the scope. If you change cartridges, you change BDC.

BDC is fastest in the field but only as accurate as the cartridge it was calibrated for. For hunting, where shot opportunities are short, the speed advantage usually wins. For long-range target work, dialing is more precise because you can confirm the exact MOA on the turret before the shot.

Five steps to zero a rifle scope at 100 yards

The cleanest field procedure uses the math above. Total time on a 100-yard range is about 30 minutes including a cold-bore shot and confirmation group.

  1. Bore-sight at 25 yards (optional). Remove the bolt or use a laser bore-sighter to align the scope's reticle to the bore. This step saves time if you don't have a 100-yard range nearby.
  2. Fire a fouling shot if the barrel has just been cleaned, then shoot a 3-shot group from a cold barrel. A cold bore tells you how the rifle shoots before the barrel heats up. Mark the center of the group; this is your reference point.
  3. Measure the offset in inches and convert to MOA. Measure the distance from the center of the group to your aiming point in inches. Divide by 1.047, then multiply by 100/distance in yards to get the MOA offset. At 100 yards, the conversion simplifies to inches / 1.047 = MOA.
  4. Dial the scope using the calculated clicks. For a 1/4 MOA scope, multiply the MOA offset by 4. Turn the elevation turret up if the group is low, down if high. Turn the windage turret right if the group is left, left if right. One click at a time; listen for the audible detent.
  5. Confirm with a second 3-shot group. Fire another group. The center should be on your aiming point. If not, repeat steps 3-4. The scope is zeroed when the cold-bore group center sits on the point of aim.

Once zeroed at 100 yards, you can use the BDC reticle to extend to 200, 300, 400 yards without re-dialing — provided the BDC is calibrated to your cartridge. If the reticle is generic, verify holdovers at known distances before relying on them in the field.
