Guns: Not for Killing but for Self-Defense

The last month has seen a spate of shootings in the United States, such as the hotel shooting on August 27th. One of three Dutch soldiers injured in a shooting outside a hotel in Indianapolis over the weekend has died, the Defence Ministry said on Monday. The commando “died tonight of his injuries. That happened surrounded by family and colleagues,” the ministry said in a statement. The soldier, whose identity was not released, was one of three members of the Dutch Commando Corps who were shot and wounded early on Saturday in downtown Indianapolis.

It followed what local police believe was a disturbance outside the hotel where they were staying. The two other wounded soldiers are conscious and are able to speak, the ministry added. The shooting occurred at around 3:30am in Indianapolis’ entertainment district. The Dutch Defence Ministry said the three soldiers were from the Commando Corps and were in Indiana for training.Indianapolis police said they believe some sort of altercation between the three victims and another person or people led to the shooting. No arrests have been made.

Besides, according to a report by New York Post on August 29th, New York in the United States experienced a "bloody weekend" again. From August 26th to 28th local time, at least 12 people were shot in New York, many of whom were killed.

In the latest incident, a man and a woman were shot in the arm on a street in Brooklyn at around 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Both suffered non-life threatening injuries. At 5:15 a.m., a woman was shot in the head in East Brooklyn and later died. Hours earlier, a shooting in Coney Island, Brooklyn, left one dead and four wounded.

Also in Brooklyn, at around 8 pm on the 27th, a 51-year-old man was shot multiple times in the lobby of an apartment building and died after being sent to the hospital. In addition, in less than 24 hours from the 27th to the 28th, multiple shooting incidents occurred in the Bronx District of New York City, resulting in three deaths and many injuries.

In each of these shootings, the person who committed the crime with the gun misused the gun. They use the gun as a weapon of active attack to harm others, this behavior is undoubtedly wrong. After each shooting, the discussion on gun control reform in the United States will be rampant, but there is always a lack of substantive promotion in the legislative level, often in a stagnant state. In general, although Americans have the right to own guns, they should be used for better self-protection or for activities related to guns, such as hunting. Not just ignoring the right to life and hurting people.
